It is Centerspace’s desire to provide a drug-free, healthful, and safe workplace. To support this goal, team members are required to report to work in an appropriate mental and physical condition to perform their jobs in a safe and satisfactory manner.
While on Centerspace premises and while conducting business-related activities off Centerspace premises, no team member may use, possess, distribute, sell, or be under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs, as defined in this policy. The legal use of prescribed drugs is permitted on the job only if it does not impair a team member’s ability to perform the essential functions of the job effectively and in a safe manner that does not endanger themselves or other individuals in the workplace. Team members are responsible for reporting the use of prescribed drugs that may affect their ability to do their job safely. Upon receiving notice, management will work in conjunction with the Talent & Culture department to modify job duties as needed to protect the safety of the team member and others.
For the purposes of this policy, “under the influence of alcohol” means testing positive for the presence of alcohol in one’s system, or actions, appearance, speech, or bodily odors that reasonably cause a manager to conclude that a team member is impaired due to alcohol use. “Under the influence of drugs” means a confirmed positive test for illegal drug use, as well as the misuse of legal drugs where there is not a valid prescription from a physician for the lawful use of the drug in the course of medical treatment, or actions, appearance, or speech that reasonably cause a manager to conclude that a team member is impaired due to drug use.
Violations of this policy may lead to disciplinary action, up to and including immediate termination of employment and/or required participation in a substance abuse rehabilitation or treatment program. Such violations may also have legal consequences.
Team members with questions or concerns about substance dependency or abuse are encouraged to discuss these matters with their manager, the Talent & Culture department, or Centerspace’s Employee Assistance Program (EAP) to receive assistance or referrals to appropriate resources in the community.
Team members with drug or alcohol problems that have not resulted in, and are not the immediate subject of, disciplinary action may request unpaid time (or paid time if available) off to participate in a rehabilitation or treatment program. Leave may be granted if the team member agrees to abstain from use of the problem substance; abides by all Centerspace policies, rules, and prohibitions relating to conduct in the workplace; and if granting the leave will not cause Centerspace any undue hardship.
Team members with questions on this policy or issues related to drug or alcohol use or abuse in the workplace should raise their concerns with their manager or the Talent & Culture department without fear of reprisal and are able to do so confidentially as outlined in our Whistleblower policy.
