Centerspace recognizes the need for team members to take time off from work following the loss of a loved one, and provides paid Bereavement Leave for this purpose.  This time off may be used to attend a funeral, travel, make funeral arrangements, and allow time to grieve. All team members are eligible for this benefit upon hire with no waiting period.

Bereavement Leave pay is calculated based on the base pay rate at the time of absence and does not include overtime or other forms of compensation such as stipends, commissions, or bonuses.

For the purposes of this policy, Centerspace provides different amounts of Bereavement Leave based on team member’s status and the loved one’s relationship to the team member.  We recognize that family can take many forms, and so the relationships listed below include biological, adoptive, and stepfamily relationships.

  • Full-time team members will be provided up to 5 paid business days of Bereavement Leave and part-time team member will be provided up to 8 paid hours of Bereavement Leave in the event of the death of the team member’s:
  • Spouse, partner, or significant other
  • Parent or parent-in-law
  • Child or child-in-law
  • Grandparent
  • Pregnancy loss, including loss of surrogacy
  • Grandchild
  • Sibling

  • Full-time team members will be provided up to 3 paid business days of Bereavement Leave in the event of death of the team member’s:
  • Sibling-in-law
  • Grandparent-in-law
  • Aunt or Uncle
  • Cousin
  • Niece or Nephew

  • All Team members will be provided up to 4 paid hours off from work to attend the funeral of an acquaintance or loved one not otherwise listed above.
  • Special consideration for Bereavement Leave may be given, with Talent & Culture approval, to any other person whose relationship to the team member was similar to any of the relationships listed above.

Bereavement Leave may be taken within 6 months of the date of death, to allow for time off to attend delayed services such as memorials or burials.

The request for Bereavement Leave must be approved by a team member’s immediate manager and will be granted unless there are unusual business needs or staffing requirements.  Team members may, with their manager’s approval, use other available paid leave for additional time off.

Within a reasonable period of time, the team member may be required to provide proof of relationship and verification of death (obituary, death certificate, etc.) to Payroll.
