It is the intent of Centerspace to clarify the definitions of employment classifications so that our team members understand their employment status and benefit eligibility.  These classifications do not guarantee employment for any specified period of time.  Accordingly, the right to terminate the at-will employment relationship at any time is retained by both the team member and Centerspace, except where prohibited by state law.

Each team member is designated as either non-exempt or exempt from federal and state wage and hour laws, and a team members classification may only be changed upon written notification from the Talent & Culture department.

  • Non-Exempt team members are entitled to overtime pay under the specific provisions of federal and state laws, and will clock in and out using Centerspace’s electronic timekeeping system.
  • Exempt team members are excluded from specific provisions of federal and state wage and hour laws.

In addition to the above categories, each team member will belong to one other employment category:

  • Regular Full-Time team members are those who are not in temporary or intern status and who are regularly scheduled to work Centerspace’s full-time schedule (30 or more hours per week).  Generally, they are eligible for Centerspace’s benefit package, subject to the terms, conditions, and limitations of each benefit program.
  • Regular Part-Time team members are those who are not in temporary or intern status and who are regularly scheduled to work fewer than 30 hours per week.  While part-time team members receive all legally mandated benefits (such as Social Security and workers’ compensation insurance) they are generally ineligible for all of Centerspace’s other benefit programs, subject to the terms, conditions, and limitations of each benefit program.
  • Temporary team members are those hired as interim replacements, to temporarily supplement the work force (such as a seasonal assignment), or to assist in the completion of a specific project.  Employment assignments in this category are of a limited duration.  Employment beyond any initially stated period does not in any way imply a change in employment status.  Temporary team members retain that status until and unless they are notified of a change.  While temporary team members receive all legally mandated benefits (such as Social Security and workers’ compensation insurance) they are ineligible for all of Centerspace’s other benefit programs, subject to the terms, conditions, and limitations of each benefit program.
  • Interns are team members who work in a position related to their field of study.  Intern positions are generally of a limited duration and will specify start and end dates.  Employment beyond any initially stated period does not in any way imply a change in employment status.  Interns retain that status until and unless they are notified of a change.  While interns receive all legally mandated benefits (such as Social Security and workers’ compensation insurance) they are generally ineligible for all of Centerspace’s other benefit programs, subject to the terms, conditions, and limitations of each program.

When determining benefit eligibility for team members, Centerspace will use a look-back period of 12 months.  Eligible hours of service during this look-back period include hours for which a team member is paid or entitled to payment for the performance of duties, or a period of time during which no duties are performed due to PTO, holiday, disability, jury duty, military leave, or leave of absence.
