The following policy will be effective immediately and until further notice and applies to all Centerspace team members.

In alignment with the CDC’s current guidance on masking in indoor public places, Centerspace expects masks to be worn in accordance with each location’s Community Level as determined by the CDC.  Community Levels can be found HERE, and the following guide outlines Centerspace's expectations for mask usage at each level.

  • High: Wear a mask in indoor public settings, regardless of vaccination status.  High-risk or immunocompromised individuals are encouraged to wear a mask or respirator with greater protection.
  • Medium: High-risk or immunocompromised individuals are encouraged to discuss masks and other precautions with their healthcare provider.
  • Low: Mask usage is based on personal preference.

Separately, some cities, counties, and/or states may enforce local mask mandates.  Where these are in effect, we will expect team members and residents to comply with their relevant ordinance.

Our expectation is that when moving about the office, you will have your mask with you and be ready to wear it.  If, at any time, a team member (or resident, prospect, vendor, or visitor) asks you to wear a mask, we expect that you will do so with no questions asked.  Anyone with underlying health conditions or high-risk factors will not be expected to explain themselves to fellow team members or others.  Our Keys include Doing the Right Thing and Serving Others, and this is one more way we can show respect and integrity when interacting with our fellow team members.

We understand that there may be a medically necessary accommodation to this policy.  If you feel you may need an accommodation, please submit a ticket to the Support Center under Talent & Culture > COVID.

Masks, Social Distancing and Hand Washing: It is important to note that face coverings or masks are not a substitute for good hand hygiene and social distancing of at least 6 feet between individuals; these both remain critical in slowing the spread of the virus.

Cloth and Disposable Masks: Team members may use any type of face covering that:

  • fits snugly but comfortably against the side of the face
  • is secure with ties or ear loops
  • includes multiple layers of fabric
  • allows for breathing without restriction; and
  • is able to be laundered and machine dried without damage or change to shape.
  • We recommend labeling your mask with your name in case it is separated from you.

Just as we must clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces daily, it is important to launder the cloth face covering often.  Cloth face coverings should be laundered after each day’s use. Individuals should be careful not to touch their eyes, nose, and mouth when removing their face coverings, and wash hands immediately after removing.

Additional information on the CDC’s guidance on face coverings, and tutorials on creating a homemade face covering can be found here: Use Cloth Face Coverings to Help Slow Spread.

Best practices and guidance on use of face masks

  • Clean your hands with soap and water or hand sanitizer before touching the mask.
  • Determine which side of the mask is the top. The side of the mask that has a point along the edge is the top and is meant to hold the mask on your nose.
  • Determine which side of the mask is the front. The colored side of the mask is usually the front and should face away from you, while the white side touches your face.
  • General guidance based on the type of mask you are using:
  • Face Mask with Ear loops: Hold the mask by the ear loops. Place a loop around each ear.  Upon removal avoid touching the front and remove by the ear loops, ties or band.
  • Face Mask with Ties: Bring the mask to your nose level and place the ties over the crown of your head and secure with a bow.  Use the ear loops to safely remove avoiding the front part of the mask.
  • Face Mask with Bands: Hold the mask in your hand with the nosepiece or top of the mask at fingertips, allowing the headbands to hang freely below hands.  Bring the mask to your nose level and pull the top strap over your head so that it rests over the crown of your head.  Pull the bottom strap over your head so that it rests at the nape of your neck. Mold or pinch the stiff edge to the shape of your nose.  Upon removal lift the bottom strap over your headfirst then pull the top strap over your head.
  • Pull the bottom of the mask over your mouth and chin.
  • Throw disposable masks in the trash and launder cloth masks.  Clean your hands with soap and water or hand sanitizer.

We will continue to re-evaluate and adjust policies related to COVID-19 as needed, and welcome feedback to your team leaders or by submitting a ticket to the Support Center under Talent & Culture > COVID.
